WHORES, RAKES AND GREASEPAINT
HERO - NELL GWYNNE early actress. Join me in the ‘stews’
of Covent Garden, where
Nell went from selling oranges as refreshments to the crowds pouring into
the Theatre Royal
Drury Lane, to actress (she invented ‘the Romantic Couple’ –
a la Audrey Hepburn and Cary
Grant and many others.) Then she met the ultimate sugar daddy of them all
– King Charles II -
and bore him two sons. The 14th Duke of St Albans is still with us. He’s
a chartered
accountant. Walk Nell’s Covent Garden and visit the Actors’ Church,
a 17th Century pub, a
shopping street from 1690s and beautiful St Martins in the Fields.
