THE MOUNTING DUTY
The duty of Life Guards and the Blues & Royals is to protect
the life and property of the Sovereign

They are two of the oldest regiments in the British Army. The Life Guards are descended
from the company of "eighty private gentlemen" who went into exile with the young
King Charles II after his father lost the English Civil War in the 1640s

In part, the Blues & Royals come from their direct opponents - the Ironsides, the
Puritan heavy cavalry raised by Oliver Cromwell to defeat the King

These highly trained and motivated warriors mount guard every day as
they have done for 350 years, at Horse Guards, the old
guardhouse protecting Westminster Palace from the north

In modern warfare, those beautifully groomed
Irish horses are swopped for tanks
