WINDSOR CASTLE
Windsor Castle is the favourite home of Britain’s Royals. Originally an 11th
century warrior’s lair, this is the spot where in 1215 King John was
besieged by his irate barons and, when he tried to "leg it" out the back
door, he was chased and cornered a few miles away beside the River Thames at
Runnymede. There the Barons forced John to sign the Magna Carta.

Windsor has been prettified during the centuries of peace, making it one of
Europe’s most picturesque castles - and also the weekend home of Queen
Elizabeth when she’s in London during the months Parliament is in session.
Elizabeth plays an important part of the governing of Britain. No
Parliamentary Bill can become law without her signature. She is very
conscientious and has survived ten Prime Ministers. Being Queen is often a
lonely and difficult job but despite the blaze of publicity, she manages to
remain quite a private person. Some of the happiest times of her life were
the 1940s. She performed her National Service during World War II working
for the British Army in vehicle maintenance, and to this day insists she can
still change the carburetor on a five ton lorry.

Visit the Royal Apartments and see one of the world’s most awesome art
collections and historic St George’s Chapel, the last resting place of Henry
VIII and the Queen Mum.
