Castles
William the Conqueror may have conquered England in 1066 at the
Battle of Hastings, but he never captured London

Londoners agreed to acknowledge William as King provided he left them alone. He had
no choice. Storming London would be like killing the goose that laid the golden eggs.
But William made sure of the acquiescence of London’s rich merchants by building
fortresses at each end of London’s commercial jugular, the Thames

At the eastern end, The Tower of London. At the western end, Windsor Castle. We can visit
both, and catch up 1000 years of British royal history – and see some of the world’s most
famous weapons and armour and one of the world’s most awesome art collections and
assemblages of baubles (the Crown Jewels – each gem has a history)
